Shemittah comes from the Hebrew root "Shamot"
to abandon to leave, to lie fallow.
The Bible Commands the Jewish People to let the land ( land
of Israel ) to lie fallow. This Commandment happens every
Seven year cycle, during the seventh year, the land must
rest, and what grows on it, is subject to certain
agricultural restrictions. The Shemittah year involves
complex legal issues and deeply meaningful ideological
concepts. Shemittah; the Jewish Sabbatical Year, is rooted
in the bible but has other Jewish philosophical aspects such
as: human dignity, Environmental aspects, trust in God,
rejecting the worship of property, support of the poor. As
an example the "abandonment of" (Shemittah - Shamot ) does
not only have the land in mind, the bible also include debts
and loans. When the Seventh year starts on The Jewish New
Year ( Rosh Hashanah ) All debts and loans are nullified, (
Between individual people not institutions ). Today there
are many ways to combine modern lifestyle while adhering to
the strict letter of the law, This Site explores these
possibilities.
